Why Polyurethane Casters Are Widely Used in Industrial Fields
Source:   Author:

Polyurethane casters have become the mainstream option for industrial handling equipment thanks to their unique material properties and structural design. Featuring adjustable elastic modulus of polyurethane (PU) and a coated wheel structure, these casters strike a balance between load capacity and shock absorption, delivering outstanding performance in factory workshops, warehousing, logistics and other working scenarios.

In terms of material mechanism, the molecular chains of polyurethane consist of alternating soft segments (polyols) and hard segments (isocyanates). This micro-structure endows PU with both the elasticity of rubber and the abrasion resistance of plastic. Products with varying hardness (Shore A 65–95) can be manufactured by adjusting the ratio of the two components, which forms the technical foundation for "customizable density" listed in product specifications. Polyurethane features a compression set rate lower than 5%, meaning it can retain its original shape even under long-term load — this is its core advantage as a caster material.

In industrial practice, polyurethane casters adopt a typical composite coated-wheel structure (metal hub + outer PU layer). The metal hub delivers rigid support, while the outer polyurethane layer absorbs vibration and reduces noise. This combination enables 6–8 inch casters to bear dynamic loads exceeding 500 kg while keeping rolling noise below 65 decibels. Compared with all-metal or all-rubber casters, this design achieves an optimal balance across three key dimensions: load-bearing capacity, floor surface protection and noise reduction.

Different application scenarios impose differentiated performance requirements on casters. Electronic workshops demand anti-static variants (surface resistance: 10⁶–10⁹ Ω), food processing factories require compliance with FDA standards, whereas logistics and warehousing prioritize abrasion resistance (Akron abrasion loss < 0.03 cm³/1.61 km). Customizable thickness, color and hardness parameters allow polyurethane casters to flexibly meet these segmented demands, which is the fundamental technical reason why their market penetration rate exceeds 40% across the domestic industrial sector.
